So this week there is no comic. I have the flu or something. Being sick has one upside; reading. Whenever I am sick, it starts a chain reaction, which usually is that I start to find the internet boring, and have to find something else to do. I usually don't feel like sitting down watching TV, so I read.
In the past 4 days I have read 3 books.
The first was
"Deathnote; Another note. The Los Angeles BB murder cases"
A long name, I know. Now, those familiar with popular anime/mangas will know the story of Deathnote. Boy finds a book that can kill people just by their name being written in it, and a detective named "L" out to find him. Los Angeles BB murder cases is in no way a spin off of Deathnote, nor is it a continuation of it. It is a seperate book, which keeps only one character; L.
In this book, L has taken on a new case to do with murders. I won't go to deep into the plot, because I'm scared I might give some of it away. You definetly don't need to have read or seen any of Deathnote to know anything in this book. Of course, it does give away information on L, so if you are going to read Deathnote, I would leave this book for the end.
Overall, it is a short book. Only around 130 pages (I think) and took me about an hour or two to read so not to long, so if you've got a short trip to take, it's a good read. Enough Rambling, the second book was
Relentless by Dean Koontz
I am a big fan of Dean Koontz. As my Twitter followers will know, when I first moved to my current house, I had no internet/TV for around a week or two. This was also the time I was in a normal sleeping habit (Bed at 9p, Waking up at 7a) and (still employed at this time) I have a month off to recover from my hospital visit. My sister still went to school back then, and I was usually home alone all day, so I took to reading. I think I read 5-6 of his books in that time. 2 of those were of the Odd Thomas series (which got my hooked). That was the first time I ever read any of his books, so now whenever I feel like reading, I get one of his books I haven't yet read, and read it. But onto the actual book.
It was an excellent book. His books usually become exciting in the first few chapters, and hold you to the end. There was only one book that didn't hold me, one of his older books that I never finished. The basic storyline of Relentless goes something like this
There's a writer with a lovely family. Writer gets a bad review. His son almost splashes the reviewer with pee. Stuff get's twisted.
I would go into it more then that, but again, I don't want to give away the story. It is now one of my favourite books (The favourites being the Odd Thomas series) so yes, I give it an A-/A
And finally
Your Heart Belongs to Me
This was not exceptionally good, compared to his other. The story is:
A wealthy internet mogul get's a heart disease. He thinks it may be from poisoning. He gets a heart, everything is fine, then something happens.
This book somewhat annoyed me. In most of Dean Koontz books you will find
A Man (usually main character)
A Woman (Usually dating the guy, a stronger figure then him. Better with guns*)
A climax, that changes to be something paranormal
And lastly, the paranormal thing
This book felt like Dean Koontz had this basic story, wanted to write it, and had to stretch it out.
Where Relentless took a sharp turn in the early chapters, Your Heart Belongs to Me was slow moving, and nothing really happened until page 270. It felt like it was resolved to easily, and the last 10 pages where the aftermath of the whole ordeal.
That's not to say I wouldn't reccomend it. If you're a fan of Dean Koontz, I would. Of course I would say to read Relentless, Odd Thomas Series, and a few others that the titles escape me.
I am now moving onto The Darkest Evening of the Year. Should be exciting. I've been waiting to read it since it first came out.
